The events committee of the Alum Rock Village Business Association has a great 2010 Light Up the Village holiday treat in store for the children and families of Alum Rock on Saturday, December 11th in “The Village” located at Alum Rock Avenue at White Road.
Beginning at 1:00 PM, an exciting program will unfold on the special stage in a courtyard near 3131 Alum Rock. Among the performances will be a combined choir from Cureton, Linda Vista and Lyndale Elementary Schools, a hip hop dance class from Joseph George Middle School, the Glory Ringers handbell choir from Foothill Presbyterian Church, the Sheppard Middle School band and tiny folklorico dancers.
Participation in the annual “Bingo Raffle” starts right at 1:00 PM when each guest can pick up a card listing nine Village businesses. They will go from door to door to have their card stamped at each store to make them eligible to win wonderful free prizes. Completed cards must be turned in by 3:15 for the 3:30 drawing.
Santa will hold court from his “House in the Village” at 10 Stewart Avenue which is also known as the historic old Alum Rock Fuel & Feed building, a familiar, nostalgic place beloved by the neighborhood. The doors will open for Santa visits and free photos at 3:30. Santa will hand out a voucher for a free library book from the Cruz/Alum Rock Library to each child as well as the traditional candy cane.
Special guests Frosty the Elf and Smokey Bear will be on the scene to add to the offerings for children which include holiday crafts led by Supervisor Dave Cortese’s staff, the UCCE Master Gardeners, the Youth Science Institute and the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council.
After the raffle winds down around 4:30, guests will gather at the corner of White and Alum Rock in front of Starbucks to hear carols performed by the James Lick High School “Gig Band.” Supervisor Dave Cortese will present a proclamation. Newly-sworn California Assembly member, Nora Campos, will remotely light the trees near the James Lick High School marquee. County Supervisor George Shirakawa will address the assembled guests before one and all raise happy voices in a holiday sing-a-long.
The event is free of charge. Cookies and milk donated by McDonalds will be given to every child. Holiday gifts plus hot dogs and tamales will be for sale. Support for the event comes from the San Jose Redevelopment Agency, District 5 City Councilmember Nora Campos, County Supervisor Dave Cortese, County Supervisor George Shirakawa, the San Jose Flea Market, Mi Pueblo Foods, McDonalds, the Cruz/Alum Rock Library, Regional Medical Center and scores of other generous folks.
In case of rain, the stage performances, bingo raffle, crafts and vendor booths will move to the James Lick gymnasium. Santa’s House will remain at Alum Rock Fuel & Feed. Unless there’s a deluge, caroling and tree lighting will still be on the corner near Starbucks. Bring umbrellas!

Since 2006, ARVBA has celebrated the winter holiday season with our free annual community event – Light Up the Village. Each year, Santa comes to visit Alum Rock Village for picture-taking opportunities with our neighborhood children. Local musicians – students and adults – perform on our special stage. Our free annual "Bingo Raffle" draws hundreds to visit Alum Rock Village businesses for the opportunity to win excellent prizes. Kids get to create various holiday-oriented crafts. Vendors offer snacks and gifts for sale. The event draws to a close with caroling and a tree-lighting ceremony.
